Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (1873- 1943). Desde muy pequeño comenzó a tocar el piano, contando con la guía de maestros como Franz Liszt y Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. El autor de Rapsodia sobre un tema de Paganini, tenía manos largas que le permitieron desarrollar una técnica que lo convirtió en uno de los pianistas más importantes del siglo XX. En 1917, con el inicio de la Revolución Rusa, se exilió primero en París y finalmente en Estados Unidos. Algunas de sus piezas más importantes son Preludio en do sostenido menor. Op. 3 No. 2, Trío elegíaco, Concierto para piano No. 3 en re menor. Op. 30 y La isla de los muertos, Op. 29. 'Danzas sinfónicas', escrita en 1940, fue su última obra. Esta suite orquestal se compone de tres tiempos que exhiben los ritmos enérgicos y las referencias a obras anteriores que evocaban a Rachmaninoff la Rusia previa a su exilio. El empleo del saxofón alto como instrumento solista hace de ésta una pieza única en su repertorio. La interpretación corre a cargo de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería bajo la dirección de Carlos Miguel Prieto y Jorge Federico Osorio al piano, en un concierto grabado en vivo el 12 y 13 de julio de 2008 en la Sala Nezahualcóyotl del Centro Cultural Universitario. Georg Friedrich Händel (Halle, Alemania, 1685- Londres, 1759). Compositor alemán naturalizado inglés. Almira, su primera ópera, se estrenó en 1705, pero su gran producción musical cuenta con piezas de diversos géneros como son las obras orquestales, operatas y oratorios. Es considerado uno de los exponentes más importantes del Barroco. En 1712 se mudó a Londres y con el aval del rey Jorge I disfrutó de varios años de éxito con la presentación de sus composiciones en diversos escenarios ingleses. En 1742 se estrenó El Mesías, el oratorio que le brindó mayor fama en su carrera. Juan Arturo Brennan reconoce que la Música acuática (1717) y la Música para los reales fuegos de artificio (1749) son las dos piezas más notables de su prolífica carrera. La pieza que presentamos a continuación, el Concierto grosso No. 7. 'El festín de Alejandro', es una oda barroca originalmente compuesta por tres conciertos instrumentales y está basada en una pieza poética del crítico literario y dramaturgo inglés John Dryden. Esta oda, cuyo estreno ocurrió en el Covent Garden de Londres en 1736, ilustra un festín ofrecido en honor a Alejandro Magno en Persépolis. En febril tributo a los soldados fallecidos en la conquista de la capital persa, el monarca de Macedonia ordenó quemar la ciudad. En la interpretación de la Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM, el concierto fue grabado en vivo en la Sala Nezahualcóyotl del Centro Cultural Universitario, el 28 de enero de 2012 bajo la dirección de Ramón Shade. Edward Elgar (Broadheadth, Inglaterra, 1857-Worcester, Inglaterra, 1934). Compositor y músico. Desde muy joven aprendió a tocar el violín, el órgano y el piano. Inició su carrera en la iglesia de San Jorge de Worcester. Sus piezas comenzaron a ser populares gracias a sus participaciones en festivales corales pero nunca alcanzó el reconocimiento que le hubiera permitido dedicarse a la composición. Fue hasta la segunda década del siglo XX cuando su obra fue revalorada. Entre sus composiciones destacan: Serenata para cuerdas (1892), Tres danzas bávaras (1897), Variaciones Enigma (1899) y El sueño de Geronte (1900). 'Marcha Pompa y circunstancia No. 1', pieza que se reproduce a continuación, es una obra instrumental que forma parte de cinco marchas militares para orquesta. Su estreno se llevó a cabo en Liverpool en 1901 y el título está inspirado en una frase de la obra Otelo, de William Shakespeare. Esta primera marcha fue interpretada durante la ceremonia de coronación de Eduardo VII acompañada del texto titulado 'Tierra de esperanza y gloria'. Hoy en día es la música orquestal más interpretada de Elgar, ya que en algunos países se utilizan fragmentos de ella como marcha nupcial y para ceremonias de graduación; también ha sido considerada una especie de himno del Reino Unido. La interpretación que se presenta en Descarga Cultura.UNAM estuvo a cargo de la Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM y contó con la dirección de Jan Latham-Koenig. Franz Liszt (Riding, Imperio austrohúngaro 1811-Bayreuth, Imperio alemán, 1886). Pianista y compositor. Se le considera el creador del poema sinfónico, pieza que a través de la música exalta sentimientos e ideas. Es autor de más de cuatrocientas obras, entre sinfonías, valses, rapsodias, sonatas y canciones. De entre sus creaciones destacan 'Tres sonetos de Petrarca', 'Sonata para piano en sí menor', 'Sinfonía Fausto' y 'De la cuna a la tumba'. La 'Rapsodia húngara No. 2', que se presenta a continuación, pertenece a un conjunto de diecinueve composiciones originalmente escritas para piano en las cuales el autor incorporó distintos ritmos de la música folclórica húngara. Seis de estas piezas fueron trasladadas a una versión para orquesta por el propio compositor, en colaboración con el director de orquesta Franz Doppler (1821-1883), como la que ahora se presenta aquí. Este concierto, en la interpretación de la OFUNAM, bajo la dirección de Marco Parisotto (director huésped), fue grabado en la sala Nezahualcóyotl el 26 y 27 de noviembre de 2011.
